The Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police, Muyiwa Adejobi, on Wednesday, gave reason why the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, is still in office, saying he was appointed by the Presidency and not promoted to the position. Alkali Baba was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the acting Inspector General of Police on April 26, 2021 for a four-year tenure. He was an Assistant Inspector General of Police when he was appointed as he had about six Deputy Inspectors General (DIG) above him.
Alkali Baba has already clocked 60 years of age and has attained the mandatory 35 years in service but he is still in office till now. (Caption): Inspector General of Police.
However, giving insight into the matter on his Twitter handle, Adejobi disclosed that the IGP was appointed by the president for a four-year term and he was not promoted to the position, adding that if it had been a case of promotion, he would have retired by now.
Citing cases of the service chiefs and former inspectors-general who were appointed to their positions, Adejobi said the men were appointed for various terms, adding that only the president can remove them or refuse to extend their tenure when they complete the terms.
He therefore said Alkali Baba was appointed by the president for four-year tenure in 2021 and the tenure is yet to lapse, adding that this is the reason why the IGP is still in office.
