OVER 20 Oil producing Communities hosting Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) in Delta State have issued a 2-Weeks ultimatum to the American Oil giant over alleged non-compliance and adherence in fulfilling their Corporate Social Responsibility to the Communities in the area of employment and empowerment.
In a letter dated 17th April, 2024 and addressed to the Chairman and Managing Director, Nigeria and Mid Africa Business Unit under the auspices of Itsekiri Employment and Empowerment Council (IEEC) and signed by Prince Lawrence Okorodudu,Vice Chairman; Comrd. Smart Omatsola Mogbusiaghan, Secretary and Comrd. Clement Mode respectively, they stated that Chevron "has failed or neglected to give back to the host Communities their due rights and privileges as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility as contained or agreed by the Nigeria Local Content Act".
The letter entitled " Demand for Employment and Empowerment Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Between Your Management and Itsekiri Onshore Oil Producing Communities " stated that they represent 23 Oil Producing Communities in Chevron's Olero, Dibi, Abiteye, Makaraba and Escravos Fields respectively and appealed to the management to call for an urgent employment negotiation meeting within 2-Weeks or face their wrath since the PIA excluded employment and empowerment opportunities for host Communities.
According to the letter, their grouse include amongst others that the host Communities were not considered in the on-going permanent staff employment, non consideration in the Catering Contract employment, non-mobilisation of indigenes in the on-going EGTL Turn Around Maintenance(TAM)Job and non-staffing of graduates of Ogere trained employees till date.
Other complaints include non-implimentation of the 2002 employment MoU before the introduction of the IRDC; non-mobilisation of indigenes in the 2018 EGTL TAM and a call for the payment of salaries of some indigenous personnel and non call up of 2009 qualified Ogere trainees for medicals till date.
The letter therefore demanded the restoration, re-mobilisation, retention, payment for above affected indigenes and "immediate call for a meeting with the IEEC, all the field Chairmen and Chevron management for an MoU on the yearly employment and empowerment issues" for there to be peace.
The letter was copied to all the relevant authorities including the General Manager CNL, Warri; Operations Manager Escravos; Director PGPA; Director HRM; Delta State Governor; Heads of the Security agencies; the Olu of Warri and Chairmen of all affected Communities.
