SWUYN Applauds President Tinubu's Directive on Minor Detainees
The Society for the Welfare of Unemployed Youths of Nigeria (SWUYN) has commended President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his swift action in addressing the plight of minors detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests. By instructing Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) to ensure their immediate release, the President has demonstrated a listening ear and commitment to protecting the rights, justice and well-being of Nigeria's most vulnerable citizens.
SWUYN also praised the directive assigning the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to oversee the rehabilitation and safe return of the minors to their families. This move acknowledges the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing the root causes of youth involvement in protests.
We praise the President's willingness to investigate the circumstances leading to the arrests and hold responsible security personnel accountable. This move sends a strong message that such actions will not be tolerated and that the rights of Nigerian citizens, particularly vulnerable youth, will be protected.
SWUYN also demand for police and security reform, emphasizing the need for systemic change to prevent similar incidents in the future. The organization reaffirmed its support for government efforts aimed at genuine reform and improved governance for unemployed youths and less privileged individuals.
This development is particularly significant given Nigeria's alarming youth unemployment rates, with 64 million youths unemployed and 1.6 million under-employed. Initiatives like vocational training programmes and financial assistance can help address this issue.
As an organization dedicated to promoting the welfare and empowerment of unemployed youths, SWUYN appreciates the President's proactive stance on this critical issue.
By working together, organizations like SWUYN and government agencies can create a brighter future for Nigeria's youth.
Signed
Amb. Preye V. Tambou
National President, SWUYN
