Key Demands:
1. Infrastructure Development:
Construction of fully equipped secretariats for the youth councils in each of the six kingdoms.
2. Transportation Support:
Provision of a 30-person capacity speedboat with 200HP outboard engines for each kingdom for official waterway movements.
An additional speedboat for coastal transportation for riverine communities.
Eighteen-seater buses for each kingdom for land transportation needs.
3. Social Welfare:
Monthly welfare support of ₦6 million from DESOPADEC’s security and safety fund to support ground security and youth council activities.
4. Expanded Skill Acquisition Programs:
An increase in skill acquisition slots, engaging at least ten youths per kingdom to address unemployment and prevent civil unrest.
5. Involvement in Programs:
Regular consultation with umbrella youth bodies on programs and initiatives to ensure they meet the specific needs of the kingdoms.
6. Commissioning of Completed Projects:
Immediate commissioning and utilization of completed but unused projects in the Ijaw kingdoms to address community needs.
Context and Concerns:
The protesters, armed with placards, emphasized their frustration with DESOPADEC’s perceived disregard for the Ijaw oil-producing communities, which contribute a significant portion of Delta State’s revenue through oil and gas production. The council’s demands align with international best practices and call for inclusivity and fairness in resource allocation.
The youth councils stressed that the commission should be open to engaging with them as they play a pivotal role in the security and development of their respective regions.
Current Developments:
Efforts are being made to engage the protesters and find a peaceful resolution to the grievances. The protest underscores the urgent need for DESOPADEC to address these issues and demonstrate its commitment to the development of the oil-producing communities.
