The family of the late elder statesman and former leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Edwin Clark, has announced that he will be laid to rest on May 13, 2025, in his hometown of Kiagbodo, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.
The burial schedule was revealed on Saturday by his eldest son, Mr. Penaowei Clark, during a press conference held at the familyโs residence in Kiagbodo.
He was joined by his siblings, including Chief Ebikeme Clark, the Delta State Commissioner for Riverine Infrastructure Development, and other notable family members.
Penaowei, a US-based industrialist, said the burial programme was drawn up after extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including government officials, political allies, and sociocultural and religious groups.
According to the statement, the weeklong series of events in honour of the late nationalist will begin on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, with a lecture at the NAF Conference Centre and Suites, Abuja, at 11am.
"On Thursday, May 8, a Valedictory Session will be held at the Senate Chambers, also at 11 a.m., followed by a Day of Tribute on Friday, May 9 at 3 p.m. at the same Abuja venue. A Service of Songs will be held at St. Jamesโ Anglican Church, Asokoro, Abuja, at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, alongside a wrestling contest in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
"The following day, Sunday, May 11, will feature a Boat Regatta, Port Harcourt Masquerade, and Candlelight Memorial across three locations: Yenagoa, Kiagbodo, and his Abuja residence.
"On Monday, May 12, a Commendation Service will take place at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, at 8 a.m., while a Valedictory Court Session will be held at the High Court of Justice, Warri, Delta State, at 10a.m.
"That same day, Clarkโs body will be flown from Abuja to Yenagoa for a service at Ijaw House by 1:30 p.m. before proceeding to Warri for a lying in state at 6:30 p.m. The body will then depart for Kiagbodo for an all-night vigil.
"On Tuesday, May 13, the final rites will commence with a lying in state and commendation service at Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo, from 10 a.m. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., and a reception will be held at 1 p.m. The interment will take place at 5 p.m. at the family compound, followed by another all-night vigil.
"A Thanksgiving Service will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2025, to conclude the programme."
Chief Edwin Clark, born on May 25, 1927, was Nigeriaโs former Federal Commissioner for Information during the military administration of General Yakubu Gowon and later a Senator in the Second Republic.
A lifelong advocate for justice, equity, and development in the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large, Clark remained active in national politics until his retirement.
Beyond politics, he was reverred in his community for founding Edwin Clark University and holding several traditional titles. Locally, he was fondly hailed as โGogorogo โ New Power,โ a tribute rooted in the legacy of his great-grandfather, Chief Bekederemo Ogbeni.
