Focus Egbema Group (FEG) Backs Egbema Youth Council’s 30-Day Ultimatum, Urges NDDC to Complete Abandoned Udo-Ofunama Road Project
By EgbemaVoice,
The Focus Egbema Group (FEG) has declared full support for the 30-day ultimatum issued by the Egbema Youth Council (EYC) to the Edo State Government and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) over the long-abandoned Udo-Ofunama Road project in Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State. The road project, originally awarded in 2011 by the NDDC under former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan's administration, remains incomplete to this day.
As an apex socio-cultural organization advocating for the development of Egbema Kingdom across Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Imo States, FEG has called on the current NDDC board to immediately mobilize contractors back to the site. The group specifically appealed to the NDDC chairman to avoid politicizing the project, stressing that the suffering of the people due to the project's abandonment is severe and unacceptable.
FEG emphasized that the road project, awarded to Japaul Mines & Products Ltd., has seen only skeletal and substandard work, which has created tensions among neighboring communities. The contractor reportedly abandoned the site and left construction materials behind without explanation.
Comrade Mingo Meshach Sayami Ogumaka, the National Coordinator of FEG, highlighted the strategic importance of the 46.5 km Udo-Ofunama Road. According to him, once completed, the road will serve as a vital link connecting all nine autonomous communities of Egbema Kingdom—Ajakurama, Ofunama, Gbeoba, Abere, Jamagie II, Ogbinbiri, Ogbudugbudu, Opuama, and Abadigbene—as well as the five Ijaw kingdoms in Edo State: Okomu, Furupia, Gbarun, and Olodiama. It will also improve connectivity between Egbema communities in both Edo and Delta States.
Comrade Mingo further appealed to Edo State Governor, Mr. Monday Okpebholo, to urgently intervene in the deplorable state of the road. He stated that the incomplete project has contributed to numerous avoidable deaths due to inaccessibility to healthcare and basic services. He described the current condition as a "painful, dangerous, and terrifying experience" for the riverine people who have no alternative land routes.
According to Mingo, many communities such as Polobubo (Tsekelewu), Opuama, Asigborodor, Ogbinbiri, Ogbudugbudu, and Abadigbene in Warri North LGA of Delta State are currently trapped by invasive water hyacinths, worsening the transportation crisis. The failure to complete the Udo-Ofunama Road has intensified their economic and social hardships.
He lamented, “Our people are mostly farmers, fishermen, and timber merchants. Without an access road, their livelihood is crippled. It’s a horrific and shameful reality, especially considering that Egbema Kingdom is host to several oil installations, including Dibi and Alero Oil Fields operated by Chevron, as well as Opu-Ekeba and Opuama Flow Stations operated by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).”
Egbema Kingdom, located in Warri North LGA of Delta State and Ovia South-West LGA of Edo State, is recognized as the second richest oil-producing Ijaw kingdom in Delta State. Despite this, Comrade Mingo noted, the communities have seen little to no tangible development or benefit from the NDDC or other interventionist agencies in the Niger Delta.
In conclusion, FEG urges the NDDC to urgently prioritize and complete the Udo-Ofunama Road, leveraging the ongoing coastal road network initiatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration to finally deliver on this long-overdue project for the benefit of the people and the region at large.
