Group lauds government’s commitment to biodiversity, ANI collaboration, and calls for urgent road rehabilitation,
Benin City, Edo State – September 10, 2025 — The Focus Egbema Group has commended the Chairman of the Edo State Forestry Commission, Hon. Valentine Asuen, for his recent courtesy visit to the Okomu Forest Reserve and National Park, describing the move as a strong demonstration of the Edo State Government’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the Central Coordinator of Focus Egbema Kingdom, Comrade Mingo Friday Sayami Ogumaka, noted that Hon. Asuen reaffirmed the state government’s resolve under the leadership of Senator Monday Okpebholo to strengthen biodiversity programs and protect Edo State’s forests and wildlife resources for future generations.
During the visit, Hon. Asuen met with members of the .Africa Nature Investors Foundation (ANI) and inspected projects jointly executed with the Edo State Government. Notably, the group commended the provision of a 30-bedroom accommodation facility for park rangers, aimed at improving their welfare and boosting security within the reserve.
The Focus Egbema Group further applauded the Conservator of Okomu National Park, Mr. Osaze Eghosa Lawrence, for his inclusive leadership and collaboration with host Ijaw and Bini communities. They highlighted his visionary steps toward ensuring sustainable development and long-lasting legacies for the park.
In addition, the group lauded ANI and its Project Manager, Mr. Peter Abanyam, for their leadership, dedication, and innovative initiatives in rebuilding and preserving the park.
The group also expressed gratitude to Hon. Asuen and the Edo State Government for their support of the FAQ GEF7 Biodiversity Project, describing the initiative as an important step in aligning Edo State with global conservation standards.
However, the Focus Egbema Group raised concern over the deplorable state of the Okomu–Olodiama–Egbema road network, stressing that neglect of this critical infrastructure continues to hinder socio-economic development. They urged Hon. Asuen to escalate the matter to the state government and appealed to Governor Okpebholo to prioritize road rehabilitation, noting that “road infrastructure is the backbone of development.”
