In a significant move aimed at strengthening Ijaw political unity ahead of the 2027 Edo State House of Assembly election, the Egbema Youth Political Forum (EGYPF), in collaboration with the Egbema Youth Council (EYC) Worldwide, Egbema Clan Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Edo State Chapter, and other prominent Ijaw political stakeholders, convened a strategic joint meeting to deliberate on the political future of the Ovia South-West Local Government Area Constituency.

The meeting focused on the need for greater unity among Ijaw political leaders and stakeholders to improve the chances of producing an Ijaw representative in the Edo State House of Assembly.
During the deliberations, participants expressed concern over the emergence of two Ijaw candidates contesting the same constituency under different political parties. The candidates are Dr. Desmond Agbedeyi of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) and Hon. Ayedi Ikiyokepere of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Following extensive consultations, and several meetings, the stakeholders stressed that the interest of the Ijaw nation must take precedence over individual political ambitions. They called on both candidates to embrace dialogue and make the necessary sacrifices by considering the emergence of a single consensus candidate capable of uniting the Ijaw people and maximizing their electoral chances.

After reviewing the political landscape, party structures, grassroots presence, candidate popularity, and the preparedness of the political parties for the 2027 election, the joint meeting unanimously endorsed Hon. Ayedi Ikiyokepere, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, as the preferred consensus candidate for the Ovia South-West State Constituency election.

According to the stakeholders, the endorsement was based on the NDC's established political structure across Edo State, from the state executive to the ward level, the party's organizational strength, and Hon. Ayedi Ikiyokepere's acceptability among the people.

The meeting therefore appealed to the good people of Ovia South-West Local Government Area, particularly the indigenous Ijaw communities, to rally behind Hon. Ayedi Ikiyokepere to ensure victory at the polls and secure quality representation for the constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly.

The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to promoting unity, peaceful political engagement, and collective action in pursuit of the long-standing aspiration of the Ijaw people for equitable political representation in Edo State.

Apologies were received from Comr. Dr. Freedom Atigbi, Immediate Past national deputy President of the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide; Comr. Peter Ajube, NDC State Secretary; Comr. Nicholas Igarama IYC Western zone chairman; Hon. Samson Uroupa; Chief Ogunkoru Robinson, former INC Western Zone Chairman; and other members who were unavoidably absent.

The meeting concluded with a renewed call for unity, strategic political collaboration, and sustained grassroots mobilization to ensure that the Ijaw people of Ovia South-West speak with one voice and secure meaningful representation in the 2027 Edo State House of Assembly election.
