The Department of Community Development and Public Enlightenment, CDPE of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, in partnership with the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Students' Affairs, Comr. Okoh Ezekiel Oghenetega PhD yesterday Thursday 14th November, 2024 held the third edition of the campaign on social vices at the Delta State Maritime Polytechnic, Burutu with the Theme
"DONT GO THERE... there's danger."
The campaign aimed at exposing the various forms of social vices also sought to provide students with the tools and resources they needed to navigate through the temptations and pressures they faced.
Commending the Executive Assistant on Students Affairs for putting up such a laudable programme, the MD/ CEO DESOPADEC, Chief Festus Ochonogor, ably represented by Pst. Gbubemi Okome, Deputy Director, Community Development and Public Enlightenment advised the students to shun cultism, drug abuse, prostitution and examination malpractice.
He further reiterated the fact that the Executive Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori believes so much in human capital development, a cardinal point of his M.O.R.E Agenda with scriptural reference to
the book of Proverbs Chapter 14 verse 12 which says, "There is a way which seemeth right unto man, but the end thereof is destruction."
Also Speaking, the Member representing the Ijaw ethnic nationality on the Board of DESOPADEC, Hon. Spencer Okubo Okpoye who was also represented by Mr. Raphael Timi Olomieghene appreciated the organiser for bringing a life changing programme of this magnitude to Burutu, the headquarters of Burutu Local Government Area.
Urging the students to desist from such vices in order not to ruin their lives, he said whatever affects them will in turn, affect the society.
In the same vein, the Guest Speaker, Comr. Vincent Udume Odogbor, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Mass Mobilization spoke on "CREATING YOUR IDENTITY" wherein he said, "It is only when you have understanding, you can stand out. Ensure to make all efforts to redefine your identity, recreate your identity and don't let anyone write you off."
Another resource person who spoke about drugs, cultism and prostitution was the organiser of the programme, Comr. Okoh Ezekiel Oghenetega, PhD Executive Assistant to the Governor on Students Affairs who said drug abuse among other social vices is a scourge that has plagued many of our institutions and must not be allowed to continue. The students were thus advised "NOT TO GO THERE."
Other Speakers at the occasion who also lent their voices to the need to carry on this campaign to the nooks and crannies of the State include the Rector of the school, represented by his Deputy, Dr. Zideke Kasikoro; Comr. Young Davidson, Youth President, Burutu Community; Comr. Aweh Nanasintei Johnson, Delta State Ijaw Students President (NADIS); Comr. Ikpidi John, Secretary, Delta State Students' Union.
