PRESS STATEMENT
Why Ijaw Leaders Are Behind the Underdevelopment of Ijaw Communities
The Ijaw Youth Leader, Comrade Mingo Meshach Saya Ogumaka, has expressed deep concerns over the persistent underdevelopment in Ijaw states, local government areas, kingdoms, and communities. Speaking on this pressing issue, Comrade Ogumaka lamented the alarming failure of Ijaw leaders in various elective and appointed positions to fulfill their primary responsibilities of driving meaningful development in the Ijaw region.
Comrade Ogumaka criticized the inability of elected leaders, including Governors, Senators, House of Representatives members, State House of Assembly members, Local Government Chairmen, Commissioners, and appointees, to execute substantial projects that could transform Ijaw communities. Instead of prioritizing the developmental needs of their people, many have abandoned their core mandates, leaving their constituencies to suffer neglect and stagnation.
He pointed out the following challenges facing Ijaw communities:
1. Environmental Degradation: The Ijaw region is plagued by severe environmental challenges, including pollution from oil exploration activities, which have devastated the ecosystem and made life unbearable for the people.
2. Lack of Social Amenities: Basic infrastructure such as roads, healthcare facilities, schools, clean water, and electricity remains a distant dream for most Ijaw communities, further exacerbating poverty and hardship.
3. Turning Communities Into Camps: Many Ijaw communities now resemble makeshift camps due to years of neglect, with no visible signs of modern development.
Comrade Ogumaka emphasized that the Ijaw nation deserves better leadership that prioritizes the welfare and development of its people. He called on Ijaw leaders in all capacities to rise above personal and political interests and focus on delivering meaningful projects that would uplift their communities.
He also urged the Federal Government, international organizations, and other stakeholders to take urgent action to address the challenges faced by the Ijaw people. The region, which contributes significantly to Nigeria's economy through oil and gas resources, deserves to benefit from its wealth and resources.
In conclusion, Comrade Ogumaka reiterated his commitment to advocating for accountability and good governance among Ijaw leaders. He called on the youth and all well-meaning Ijaw people to join forces in demanding the development their communities desperately need.
Signed:
Comrade Mingo Meshach Saya Ogumaka
Youth Leader, Egbema Kingdom
