Niger Delta youth stakeholders chairman Progressive Youth leadership foundation of Niger Delta Edo State chapter, comrade Mingo Meshach Sayami Ogumaka have strongly criticized the conduct of the region’s representatives in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, accusing them of lacking integrity, prioritizing personal interests, and failing to address the real challenges facing the Niger Delta.
In a press briefing, a prominent youth leader Comrade Sayami from the region expressed his disappointment over the actions of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who has been embroiled in a controversial political battle allegedly targeting Delta State born son wife Mrs. Senator Natasha Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central. Reports suggest that Akpabio attempted to initiate a personal relationship with Senator Uduaghan, but after she refused, she was subjected to political suppression, including an unfair six-month suspension from the Senate. The situation escalated further when the constituency moved to recall her, but she faced additional suppression allegedly orchestrated by the Kogi State Governor and the state’s Commissioner of Police, who reportedly prevented her from holding political rallies.
According to Niger Delta youth stakeholders, this type of political maneuvering is an embarrassment to the region and an abuse of power that undermines democracy. They condemned the use of political influence to silence elected representatives, especially when it stems from personal vendettas rather than legitimate governance concerns.
Political Instability in Rivers State: A Constitutional Violation
The youth leader Sayami also pointed out the deepening political crisis in Rivers State, where a power struggle between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has led to actions that disregard constitutional provisions. The recent suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and several House of Assembly members has sparked outrage, as there is no section of the Nigerian Constitution that grants anyone the power to suspend a sitting governor.
“This is a clear violation of democratic principles and a misuse of authority,” the youth leader stated. “If such unconstitutional actions can take place in Rivers State, then democracy is at risk across Nigeria. The people of Niger Delta will not stand by and watch their leaders destroy the credibility of governance.”
He further accused Niger Delta representatives in Tinubu’s administration of turning a blind eye to the political crisis in the region, choosing instead to focus on their personal ambitions. The youth leader insisted that true leadership requires standing up for justice and protecting the people, not engaging in power struggles that only serve political elites.
Failure of Niger Delta Representatives in Tinubu’s Government
The Niger Delta youth stakeholders expressed their frustration with the overall performance of the region’s representatives in Tinubu’s government, stating that they have failed to push for meaningful development, economic empowerment, and infrastructural improvements. Instead, they have engaged in political gamesmanship, enriching themselves while neglecting the needs of the people they are supposed to serve.
“They lack integrity and vision,” the youth leader said. “A true leader does not accept bribes or compromise the future of his people for personal gain. Our so-called representatives in this administration have become self-serving politicians who do not care about the struggles of the Niger Delta.”
He further emphasized that despite the Niger Delta’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s economy, particularly through oil and gas resources, the region continues to suffer from underdevelopment, poor infrastructure, environmental degradation, and high unemployment rates. The stakeholders criticized the representatives for failing to advocate for key issues such as:
Completion of abandoned projects: Including roads, bridges, and schools that have been neglected for years despite budget allocations.
Environmental restoration: Addressing the devastating effects of oil spills and pollution in Niger Delta communities.
Youth empowerment and job creation: Implementing programs that provide sustainable employment opportunities rather than temporary political handouts.
Security and stability: Tackling the rise in violence, kidnappings, and conflicts that threaten the peace of the region.
Call for Accountability and a New Leadership Direction
The youth stakeholders called for urgent accountability from the Niger Delta representatives in Tinubu’s administration, urging them to step up or step aside. They also warned that if the current leadership continues to fail, the people of the region will demand a change and mobilize for better representation in future elections.
“We will not allow our future to be dictated by leaders who do not care about us,” the youth leader declared. “The Niger Delta deserves true representation—leaders who will fight for development, justice, and progress, not personal enrichment and political oppression.”
The youth further urged President Tinubu to review the performance of Niger Delta representatives in his administration and ensure that competent individuals who genuinely care about the region’s development are placed in key positions. They also called on the Senate and relevant authorities to stop the suppression of Senator Natasha Uduaghan and uphold the democratic rights of all elected representatives.
Conclusion
The Niger Delta youth stakeholders have made their stance clear: the region will no longer tolerate failed leadership and political oppression. They demand accountability, transparency, and genuine commitment to the welfare of the people. Unless urgent action is taken, the growing discontent in the region could escalate, leading to stronger demands for justice and leadership reforms.
