The AIG And IGP Have Been Secretly Removed From PenCom - CSP Raphael Irowainu Reveals
CSP Raphael Irowainu (Rtd), the National Coordinator of the Retired Police Officers Forum, has raised serious concerns about alleged irregularities within the Nigeria Police pension structure.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Irowainu accused the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force of secretly removing top-ranking officers from the contributory pension scheme while leaving lower-ranking personnel to suffer under the same system.
According to Irowainu, the decision to exempt senior officers such as Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs) up to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) from the contributory pension scheme was carried out without legal approval.
He emphasized that such an action violates the provisions of the National Pension Commission (PenCom) Act, which requires legislative amendment by the National Assembly before any government group or agency can withdraw from the scheme.
“The AIG to Inspector General of Police have been secretly removed from the scheme even without passing through the National Assembly. How they exited the AIG to Inspector General of Police, only God knows, leaving the CP to constable under that scheme,” he said.
Irowainu lamented that despite numerous protests, appeals, and engagements with PenCom, the plight of retired police officers remains unresolved.
He described the contributory pension system originally introduced to promote accountability and sustainability as a source of great hardship for many retired officers who can barely survive on their pensions.
The retired police officer further expressed disappointment in the police management team, accusing them of neglecting the welfare of their subordinates.
He noted that the preferential treatment given to senior officers has caused serious division and resentment within the force. Serving officers, he added, now feel demoralized and betrayed
