BREAKING: GOODLUCK JONATHAN AMONG LEADERS REPORTEDLY TRAPPED IN GUINEA-BISSAU AS SOLDIERS SEIZE POWER
Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, is reportedly among several high-profile leaders trapped in Guinea-Bissau following a sudden military takeover in the country.
Jonathan, who travelled to Bissau on a peace and mediation mission ahead of post-election consultations, was caught in the middle of the unfolding crisis as soldiers seized control of key state institutions and forcefully halted the electoral process.
According to early reports, heavy gunfire echoed across the capital, Bissau, as the military moved to assert control, blocking major routes, shutting the nation’s borders, and placing political leaders under heavy guard. The coup leaders claimed they acted to “restore order” amid rising political tensions in the country.
Diplomatic sources have confirmed that efforts are currently underway to secure Jonathan’s safety, alongside other diplomats and officials caught in the upheaval. Negotiations are said to be ongoing to facilitate his evacuation should conditions worsen.
The situation remains fluid, with regional bodies, including ECOWAS and the African Union, monitoring developments and assessing possible intervention steps to prevent further destabilization in the already fragile West African sub-region.
The Economic Times Nigeria will continue to monitor the situation and provide timely updates as more details emerge.
