FCT Nyesome Wike Mulls Endorsing Gov Sim Fubara for 2nd Term
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, has addressed speculation about endorsing current Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara for a second term in the 2027 elections. Following a political crisis that led to a state of emergency in Rivers State earlier in 2025, Wike and Fubara reached a reconciliation facilitated by President Bola Tinubu.
Wike has confirmed that peace has been restored, stating that he has forgiven Fubara and they are now communicating regularly to focus on governance.
Wike has explicitly denied rumors of any political deal requiring Fubara to abandon his 2027 ambitions in exchange for peace, calling such claims “speculation” and emphasizing that all resolutions were made with Fubara’s full participation.
He has stressed that discussions about a second term are premature, noting there are still about two years before the elections and urging a focus on development rather than politics that could spark new crises.
In a TV interview, when directly asked if he would support Fubara for re-election, Wike avoided a firm commitment, saying, “Let’s not bring up what can cause unnecessary crisis. We still have two years. Let us focus on helping the governor to deliver governance.”
That said, some observers, including the President of the Ijaw Youth Council, have suggested that if Fubara maintains a people-oriented approach and prioritizes peace, support from Wike’s camp and other stakeholders could materialize for a second term.
Fubara himself has reaffirmed loyalty to Wike, which could signal ongoing alignment.
