Egbema Focus Group (EFG): A Unified Vision for the Development of the Egbema Nation
The formation of the Egbema Focus Group (EFG) represents a landmark initiative aimed at uniting all sons and daughters of Egbema across Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Imo States. This movement seeks to foster unity, solidarity, and a collective vision to advance the development and welfare of the Egbema people, while addressing long-standing issues of deprivation and marginalization.
Egbema Kingdom, as an oil and gas-producing region contributing significantly to Nigeria's economy, has faced systemic neglect and underdevelopment in the areas it occupies across these five states. The EFG envisions a future where Egbema is empowered to claim its rightful place in national and regional development, while preserving its cultural and ancestral heritage.
Goals and Objectives of EFG:
1. Promoting Unity and Shared Identity:
The EFG aims to bring together all Egbema people as one family, bound by a common ancestry, history, and shared challenges. This unity will serve as a foundation for building solidarity, eliminating divisions created by state boundaries, and strengthening the collective voice of the Egbema nation.
2. Focusing on Development:
The group will prioritize infrastructural and economic development in Egbema communities. It will advocate for modern amenities, improved healthcare, quality education, and sustainable livelihoods for the people. Special attention will be given to neglected areas, including abandoned projects like the Udo-Ofunama road, which has caused immense hardship to residents.
3. Advocating for Fair Treatment and Resource Allocation:
Egbema, despite its contributions to oil and gas production, has been marginalized in resource allocation, governance, and state development plans. The EFG will lobby federal and state governments to ensure equitable representation, increased funding, and the completion of long-overdue projects in Egbema communities.
4. Addressing Environmental Challenges:
The environmental degradation caused by oil exploration activities has had a devastating impact on Egbema communities, leading to loss of livelihoods and health hazards. The EFG will demand accountability from oil companies and advocate for cleanup efforts, compensation for affected communities, and sustainable practices to protect the environment.
5. Empowering Youths and Women:
A key focus of the EFG will be reducing youth restiveness by creating opportunities for skills development, entrepreneurship, and employment. Women, as vital stakeholders in community development, will also be empowered through targeted programs aimed at enhancing their socio-economic participation.
6. Preserving Cultural Heritage:
The EFG recognizes the importance of preserving the rich cultural heritage and identity of the Egbema people. Efforts will be made to document and promote Egbema traditions, festivals, language, and history, ensuring that future generations remain connected to their roots.
Challenges Faced by the Egbema Nation:
1. Lack of Recognition:
Despite its historical and cultural significance, Egbema Kingdom has yet to receive official recognition in some states, such as its absence from the Edo State Traditional Council. The EFG will push for the acknowledgment of Egbema as a key stakeholder in the state's governance and traditional institutions.
2. Neglected Infrastructure:
Several vital projects, like the Udo-Ofunama road in Edo State, have been abandoned for years, leaving Egbema communities in severe hardship. Poor road networks, inadequate healthcare facilities, and limited access to basic amenities are pressing issues that demand urgent attention.
3. Marginalization:
The division of Egbema into five states has diluted its influence and representation in governance. The EFG will work to ensure that the collective voice of Egbema people is heard and their interests represented at all levels of government.
4. Impact of Oil Exploration:
Oil exploration has caused extensive environmental damage in Egbema communities, including oil spills, gas flaring, and deforestation. These issues have not only harmed the ecosystem but have also displaced many from their traditional livelihoods.
5. Insecurity and Youth Restiveness:
The lack of economic opportunities has led to increased insecurity and restiveness among Egbema youths. Addressing this requires immediate attention to job creation, empowerment programs, and investment in education and skill acquisition.
Call to Action:
The EFG is calling on:
Egbema Sons and Daughters: To join hands and actively participate in the group’s initiatives, contribute ideas, and collaborate for the betterment of the Egbema nation.
Government Authorities: To recognize the unique challenges faced by Egbema communities and prioritize their inclusion in developmental plans.
Oil Companies: Operating within Egbema territories to fulfill their corporate social responsibilities by investing in the community’s infrastructure, health, education, and environmental restoration.
Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs): To partner with the EFG in addressing social, economic, and environmental issues.
Conclusion:
The Egbema Focus Group (EFG) stands as a beacon of hope for the Egbema nation, embodying the spirit of unity, resilience, and progress. By coming together as one united family, Egbema sons and daughters have the potential to transform their ancestral homeland into a model of development, equity, and cultural pride. Through collective effort and strategic advocacy, the EFG aims to ensure that the Egbema nation receives its rightful share of resources, recognition, and opportunities in Nigeria.
