Niger Delta Youth leader, Comrade Mingo Meshach Sayami Ogumaka, has extended heartfelt condolences to the Nigerian Army and the families of the 17 soldiers killed during a clash with suspected bandits in Bangi community, Mariga Local Government Area, Niger State.
In a statement released on Saturday, Comrade Mingo commended the Nigerian military for their unwavering commitment to safeguarding national security despite the daunting challenges they face. He urged all security agencies and citizens to collaborate in addressing the country’s persistent security concerns.
He called on the Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to critically reassess and elevate the welfare of Nigeria’s security personnel. He emphasized the need to remove the Nigeria Police Force from the contributory pension scheme, citing concerns over the scheme’s inadequacies and its impact on the morale and effectiveness of police officers.
"Internal security remains a significant challenge," Mingo remarked, highlighting the porous state of Nigeria’s borders, which facilitates the illegal importation of small and light arms into the country. He noted that addressing these issues requires bold reforms and proactive measures.
Mingo criticized leadership failures at both the community and governmental levels, stating, “Bandits and herdsmen are not from heaven; they are Nigerians and, in some cases, tenants in our communities. This calls for an urgent shift towards community policing and the establishment of state police.”
He reiterated the importance of addressing the root causes of insecurity through better governance, enhanced welfare for security personnel, and stronger collaboration between communities and law enforcement agencies.
