The recent #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja has once again revealed the deep cracks in Nigeria’s democratic system and law enforcement institutions. Rather than upholding the rule of law, the actions of the Nigerian Police Force during the peaceful demonstration appeared to undermine it—teargassing unarmed citizens exercising their constitutional rights.

Such conduct is not only a breach of democratic principles but also a violation of Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and association. The use of excessive force against peaceful protesters erodes public trust in law enforcement and exposes the widening gap between the government and the governed.

Nigeria must learn from history—violent suppression of civil protests has often led to unrest, instability, and, in some cases, the collapse of governments. True leadership listens to the people, not silences them.

Furthermore, the judiciary, once seen as the last hope of the common man, is increasingly being viewed with suspicion. Allegations of bias, delay, and compromise have raised fears that justice in Nigeria is becoming inaccessible to ordinary citizens.

If democracy must survive, the Nigerian government must uphold constitutional freedoms, ensure accountability within security agencies, and restore public confidence in the judiciary. The voice of the people remains the foundation of any legitimate government.
