In an era when the media landscape has been transformed by technology, shifting political realities and changing public expectations, few journalists have remained as relevant, resilient and respected as Elder Chukwudi Abiandu.
As he turns 70, colleagues, associates and admirers are celebrating not just a birthday, but a remarkable life dedicated to journalism, public communication, leadership and service.
For more than four decades, Abiandu has remained a familiar and influential figure in Nigerian journalism. His career, spanning over 43 years, reflects the story of a consummate professional who rose through the ranks on the strength of discipline, excellence and an unwavering commitment to ethical journalism.
His journey began in 1981 when he undertook industrial training at the iconic Daily Times of Nigeria before receiving formal newsroom grooming at the prestigious Times Newspaper Training Centre, now the Times Journalism Institute, Lagos. Those early years laid the foundation for what would become an outstanding career in the media.
When The Guardian Newspaper was launched in February 1983, Abiandu was among its pioneer sub-editors. Over the next 18 and a half years, he distinguished himself in virtually every newsroom assignment, serving as Deputy Editor and Chief Sub-editor of Guardian Express, Katsina State Correspondent, Lagos Correspondent, Senior Political Correspondent and Acting News Editor. His contributions helped shape one of Nigeria's most influential newspapers during its formative years.
In 2000, he joined another historic media venture, Daily Independent, as Deputy Political Editor. Once again, his professionalism earned him greater responsibilities, serving variously as News Editor, Group Politics Editor, Night Editor and Acting Editor. His ability to combine editorial excellence with sound news judgment made him one of the trusted hands in the newsroom.
Beyond newspaper journalism, Abiandu demonstrated remarkable entrepreneurial vision. He established Chukson Limited, a diversified business with interests in public relations, media consultancy, human resource development, fish farming and general commerce, proving that journalists can successfully apply their communication skills beyond the newsroom.
His expertise also found expression in public service. He served as Special Assistant to the Delta State Commissioners for Information and Health, where he deployed his communication experience to support government programmes and public engagement.
He equally contributed to political communication, serving in strategic media roles during successive People's Democratic Party campaign organisations that culminated in the election of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa as Governor of Delta State in 2015.
An accomplished trainer and mentor, Abiandu has impacted generations of media professionals. As a part-time lecturer at the International Institute of Journalism, Asaba Study Centre, and consultant to several organisations, including the Delta State Printing and Publishing Company Limited, publishers of The Pointer, he helped shape young journalists while strengthening institutional communication capacity. His numerous presentations at workshops and seminars for government agencies further underscore his passion for knowledge sharing.
His quest for professional excellence has taken him across continents. From the Centre for Foreign Journalists in Virginia, United States, to the BBC World Service training on Online Journalism, the United Nations-sponsored HIV/AIDS reporting programme in Kenya, and the Thomson Reuters Foundation's Investigative Reporting Course in London, Abiandu consistently embraced learning, adapting to emerging trends in global journalism.
Academically, he combines practical newsroom experience with solid educational credentials, holding a degree in Mass Communication from Ambrose Alli University, a Diploma in Journalism and a Diploma in Business Law from the University of Lagos. His academic work on public relations and organisational effectiveness reflects his enduring interest in strategic communication.
Yet, beyond the headlines, deadlines and newsroom pressures lies another defining aspect of his life, his unwavering Christian faith. A Deacon at Living Faith Church (Winners' Chapel), Asaba, Abiandu has served faithfully in numerous leadership positions, demonstrating the same commitment to service that has characterised his professional life.
Today, he continues to contribute to the evolving media ecosystem as Publisher of Banner Online News and Vice Chairman of the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF), championing credible digital journalism in an age increasingly challenged by misinformation and sensationalism.
To colleagues, he is a meticulous editor; to younger journalists, a dependable mentor; to public officials, a trusted communications strategist; and to family and friends, a devoted husband, father of six and a man of quiet humility.
As Chukwudi Abiandu celebrates his 70th birthday, his legacy extends beyond the stories he edited, the headlines he wrote or the institutions he served. His greatest contribution lies in the countless journalists he inspired, the standards he upheld and the values of professionalism, integrity and excellence that continue to define his life's work.
At 70, Chukwudi Abiandu remains a shining example that journalism is not merely a profession but a lifelong calling to inform, educate, inspire and serve society.
