The Chairman of the Progressive Youth Leadership Foundation of Niger Delta (PYLF-ND), Edo State Chapter, Comrade Mingo Sayami Ogumaka, has expressed deep concern over the underdevelopment of the Niger Delta region. He urged the people of the region to hold their political leaders accountable for their failures and lack of productivity while in elective offices.
Speaking on the state of intervention agencies such as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs (now the Ministry of South-South), the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and other state agencies in the region, Comrade Mingo lamented their inability to deliver on their mandates. He emphasized that these agencies have fallen short of their responsibilities, leaving communities in the Niger Delta, including the Egbema Kingdom, in hardship despite their vast contributions to the nation's economy.
He charged Niger Deltans to rise above political sentiments and begin to demand accountability from their leaders. According to him, "Our resources are being used to develop other regions, while our people suffer. The intervention agencies and political leaders have failed us, and it is time for us to demand better governance and leadership."
Comrade Mingo's statement reflects the frustration of many Niger Delta youths who feel neglected and underserved, even as the region continues to produce the bulk of Nigeria's oil wealth. He called on all stakeholders, including youth leaders, community heads, and civil society organizations, to unite and demand equitable development for the region.
This renewed call for accountability comes amidst growing calls for improved infrastructure, healthcare, education, and job opportunities in the Niger Delta region.
