Niger Delta youth leader, Comrade Mingo Meshach Saya Ogumaka, has paid glowing tribute to High Chief David Imole Reje, a frontline activist, freedom fighter, and scribe of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), on the occasion of his birthday anniversary 24 April,
Comrade Mingo, President of the Ajakurama Development Initiative and Chairman of the Progressive Youth Leadership Foundation of Niger Delta, Edo State chapter, extolled High Chief Reje as a symbol of courage, resilience, and selflessness in the Niger Delta struggle. Born into the illustrious Reje family in Egbema Kingdom, indeed Ajakurama town, traditional headquarters of Egbema kingdom, High Chief David Reje grew up with a strong sense of justice and a deep connection to the struggles of his people. From a young age, he dedicated himself to advocating for resource control, environmental justice, and the emancipation of the Niger Delta people. His leadership has left an indelible mark on the region's history, inspiring countless others to join the fight for equity and development.
High Chief Reje’s selfless commitment to the survival of the Niger Delta led to significant milestones, including the establishment of DESOPADEC and the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs. As the former Chairman of IYC Western Zone, he championed the cause for a South-South presidency, a struggle that culminated in the emergence of former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
A Personal Reflection Comrade Mingo shared a heartfelt personal experience, recalling how High Chief Reje played a pivotal role in shaping his early journey as a comrade. At a time when others discouraged him from contesting for the position of Youth Public Relations Officer in the Ajakurama Youth Council, it was High Chief Reje who stood by him, offering words of encouragement and unwavering support.
“You believed in me when others doubted my abilities, and your encouragement gave me the strength to persevere. Your faith in the youth and your dedication to nurturing future leaders is a testament to your visionary leadership,” Comrade Mingo said.
High Chief Reje also played a critical role in resolving the protracted crisis in Egbema Kingdom, which had divided the kingdom for over thirty years. Despite the challenges, he remained steadfast, working alongside other leaders to restore peace and unity to the kingdom during a tumultuous period when two monarchs reigned concurrently. His efforts ensured that the kingdom could heal and move forward as a united entity.
On this auspicious occasion of his birthday, Comrade Mingo offered heartfelt prayers for High Chief David Reje: “May the Almighty bless you with long life, good health, and unending strength to continue your noble service to humanity. May your sacrifices for the Niger Delta and Egbema Kingdom be rewarded abundantly. Your legacy of courage and dedication shall continue to inspire generations to come. May peace, joy, and prosperity follow you always, and may your dreams for a better Niger Delta be fulfilled.”
Comrade Mingo concluded by reiterate that, the current achievements and recognition of the Niger Delta as a force to reckon with are due to the selfless sacrifices of leaders like High Chief Reje. He urged all Niger Delta youths to emulate the exemplary life of Chief Reje and work tirelessly for the unity and progress of the region.
