Ijaw Commissioner Okpoye Felicitates With High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo (Tompolo) on Honourary Doctorate Award

The Honourable Commissioner representing Ijaw Ethnic Nationalities on the Board of DESOPADEC, a prominent Warri North grassroots politician and a critical leader in Egbema Kingdom, Hon. Spencer Okubo Okpoye (JP), has congratulated High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo (GOC), on his conferment of the Honorary Doctor of Laws, LL.D (Honoris Causa) by Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo, during the institution’s combined 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Convocation Ceremonies held in Kiagbodo Town, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.
Hon. Okpoye described the honour as “well-deserved,” stating that Tompolo’s unparalleled contributions to the Niger Delta and the entire Ijaw nation have continued to influence national development positively. He recalled Tompolo’s strategic leadership during the Niger Delta agitation from the late 1990s to 2007, noting that his role was instrumental in several major national milestones, including:
Creation of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs presently South South Development commission,
Establishment of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)
Formation of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP)
Setting up of the Socio-Economic Council for Coastal States
Enhanced protection and security of critical national assets
Hon. Okpoye further emphasized that Tompolo remains “a unifying force in Ijaw land and the Niger Delta at large,” adding that his unwavering service and sacrifices for peace, progress, and justice continue to speak volumes.
He also highlighted Tompolo’s humanitarian impact through the Tompolo Foundation, established in 2012, which has supported numerous communities through scholarships, rural healthcare, disaster relief, and welfare initiatives across the Niger Delta. He commended Tompolo’s pivotal role in the establishment and growth of the Nigeria Maritime University, as well as his leadership as Chairman of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, and his revered title as the Ibe-Ebidouwei of Ijaw Nation.
“GOC is the light of the Niger Delta and the pride of the Ijaw nation. I urge the entire region to stand by him, pray for him, and support his continued efforts toward peace, development, and unity,” Hon. Okpoye stated.
