Senate Approves Death Penalty for Kidnappers and Their Accomplices.
The Nigerian Senate has endorsed a bill that would impose the death penalty on kidnappers and anyone aiding their operations, including informants, financiers, transporters, and accomplices.
The legislation, sponsored by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, seeks to classify kidnapping as an act of terrorism under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, giving security agencies wider powers to combat the rising cases of abductions and ransom-related crimes.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio presided over the session, where lawmakers stressed the urgent need for strict measures to curb kidnapping across the country.
The bill was passed for further legislative review and has been referred to relevant committees, including Judiciary, National Security, and Interior, with a report expected within two weeks.
If enacted, the law will impose the death sentence on anyone convicted of participating in kidnapping, directly or indirectly.
