IJAW TRADITIONAL THRONES ARE SACRED — YOUTH LEADER URGES SEIMBIRI KINGDOM TO UPHOLD GAZETTED ROTATIONAL SYSTEM

The integrity of traditional institutions in Ijaw land has again come under focus as concerns deepen over the ongoing kingship process in Seimbiri Kingdom.
A prominent Niger Delta youth leader, Comrade Mingo Sayami Ogumaka, has called on the Seimbiri Kingdom Traditional Council of Chiefs to strictly uphold the sanctity of Ijaw customs, traditions, and the gazetted rotational kingship system guiding the emergence of monarchs.
Speaking on the developing situation, Comrade Mingo emphasized that Ijaw traditional thrones are sacred heritage institutions and must not be reduced to political contests or influenced by practices alien to Ijaw culture.
According to him, the Edegbene Ruling House, which is next in line to produce the king of Seimbiri Kingdom under the established rotational arrangement, has duly nominated its candidate in line with tradition. However, concerns have arisen following reports that there are now two candidates being positioned for selection, contrary to the decision of the ruling house.
He further expressed worry over allegations that nomination forms were allegedly sold to aspirants without the knowledge or consent of the Edegbene community — a development he described as a clear deviation from established Ijaw traditional processes.
Comrade Mingo therefore urged the Traditional Council of Chiefs, particularly under the leadership of Chief Dr. T. M. O. Douglas (PhD), to remain steadfast in defending the dignity and cultural heritage of the Ijaw people by ensuring full compliance with the gazetted rotational kingship structure.
“Ijaw traditional stools are not political seats where individuals contest for power through modern electoral mechanisms. The process is deeply rooted in customs and must be respected.
The ruling house has the sole responsibility to nominate its king, and that tradition must be upheld,” he stated.
He further called on all stakeholders in Seimbiri Kingdom to avoid actions capable of undermining unity, peace, and the long-standing cultural values of the Ijaw nation.
The youth leader reaffirmed that preserving the integrity of traditional institutions is essential for maintaining order, identity, and continuity within Ijaw communities, urging the council to see the process through in accordance with tradition and the gazette
