Nigeria Mourns Edwin Clark as Pondi Leads Tribute in Green Chamber
…Calls for His Immortalization
The Member representing Burutu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Julius Pondi, has formally announced the passing of Chief Senator Dr. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, describing him as a "great patriot" and an "icon of national unity."
Speaking on the floor of the Green Chamber on Tuesday, Hon. Pondi paid tribute to the late elder statesman, acknowledging his immense contributions to Nigeria, particularly to the Ijaw nation and the South-South region.
"Chief Edwin Clark was not just an individual; he was an institution, a pillar of wisdom, and a dependable voice for the people of the Niger Delta. His demise at the age of 97 is a profound loss, but his legacy will live on," Pondi stated.
He highlighted Chief Clark’s extensive political career, recalling his service as Commissioner for Education in the Midwest State under Brigadier General Samuel Ogbemudia and later as Federal Commissioner for Information in General Yakubu Gowon’s administration. Pondi also noted that the late icon was once a distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic and a key figure in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
"At the twilight of his life, he founded the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), a platform he used effectively to advocate for the development of the Niger Delta," he added.
Hon. Pondi emphasized that despite Clark’s age, his presence and influence remained invaluable, and his passing has left a void in the Ijaw nation and beyond.
"As it is known in the affairs of men, there is a time to be born and a time to die. Today, the nation mourns, but in our grief, we take solace in the fact that Chief Clark lived a fulfilled life and never let his people or the nation down," he said.
In recognition of Clark’s immense contributions, Hon. Pondi called for a moment of silence in his honor and urged the Federal Government to immortalize him as a mark of national appreciation.
"Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark deserves to be remembered in perpetuity. A vote for his immortalization would be a befitting tribute to his unwavering dedication to the nation," he concluded.
