Bomadi, Delta State — The Seimbiri Kingdom in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State is approaching a defining moment in its traditional leadership succession following the passing of its revered monarch.
With the throne now vacant, attention has shifted to the kingdom’s gazetted rotational kingship structure, which places the Edegbene ruling house next in line to produce the new king. Stakeholders across the kingdom have commended the Head of the Seimbiri Traditional Council, High Chief M. T. Douglas, PhD, for his principled leadership and strict adherence to the gazette and established Ijaw customs.
Members of the Edegbene ruling house have expressed confidence in the Seimbiri Traditional Council of Chiefs, applauding its unity, transparency, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the kingdom’s traditional institutions.
The Seimbiri Kingdom operates a legally recognised rotational kingship arrangement designed to ensure fairness, stability, and equitable representation among its ruling houses. The recognised order of succession is: Enekorogha, Oboro, Okpokunou, Edegbene, Donou-Ogusu
Historically, the Oboro, Enekorogha, and Okpokunou ruling houses have each produced monarchs. With the throne presently vacant, both customary tradition and the official gazette jointly affirm that the next monarch must emerge from the Edegbene ruling house.
Stakeholders within and beyond the kingdom have emphasised that the Seimbiri kingship institution is a sacred cultural and spiritual heritage, not a political one. While the Governor of Delta State performs the ceremonial presentation of the staff of office, the selection process remains the exclusive preserve of Ijaw custom and must be insulated from political influence or external interference.
Reacting to the development, Niger Delta youth leader, Comrade Mingo Meshach Sayami Ogumaka, commended the Traditional Council of Chiefs for upholding the gazetted rotational order, describing the council’s stance as a demonstration of responsible and visionary traditional leadership.
According to him, adherence to the gazette guarantees equal opportunity for qualified candidates from the Edegbene ruling house to participate in the succession process, while also preserving peace and unity within the kingdom.
Charge the kingdom to Maintain transparency, credibility, and fairness to strengthen public confidence in the kingdom’s traditional leadership for the selection of new monarch
Comrade Mingo, a respected advocate for unity and development in the Ijaw nation and National President of Izon BiBi Worldwide, reiterated the importance of the council’s leadership role in safeguarding the cultural heritage, dignity, and sanctity of the Seimbiri throne.
As the kingdom enters this critical chapter, stakeholders believe that continued respect for tradition, the gazette, and principled leadership will preserve peace, unity, and cultural identity in Seimbiri Kingdom. The collective message remains clear: the sanctity of the throne must be protected, and ancestral customs must continue to guide the succession process for the good of the kingdom and future generations
