The leadership transition within the Ijaw National Congress was formally sealed during a valedictory and handover session as the outgoing President, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, officially transferred authority to the newly elected President, High Chief Macdonald Igbadiwei.
The ceremony, held in an atmosphere of dignity, unity, and institutional order, also featured the presentation of awards to members of the outgoing executive council in recognition of their stewardship, dedication, and contributions toward the advancement of the Ijaw nation and the strengthening of the apex Ijaw socio-cultural body.
Stakeholders and delegates at the event expressed confidence in the capacity of the new leadership to sustain the vision and aspirations of the Ijaw people, while commending the outgoing administration for its service and commitment to the Ijaw struggle and development.
The proceedings reflected a strong spirit of continuity, responsibility, and collective resolve as the congress begins a new chapter under the leadership of High Chief Macdonald Igbadiwei.
Dignitaries present at the historic gathering included traditional rulers from the three zones of the Ijaw nation, neighbouring ethnic nationalities’ monarchs, political leaders, federal and state appointees, clergymen, business leaders, the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, members of the Ijaw Publishers Forum, Niger Delta freedom fighters, and prominent national figures.
Among notable personalities at the event were Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme Dr. Dennis Burutu Otuaro, former Deputy Governor Kingsley Burutu Otuaro, as well as Ijaw leaders from home and the diaspora, cultural groups, and representatives from the six Ijaw-speaking states who stormed the occasion to witness what many described as the beginning of a new era for the Ijaw nation.
