In 1999, as ethnic tensiøns between Yorubas and Ijaws intensified in Lagos and the Niger Delta, 150 Yoruba police officers abandoned their posts in Bayelsa and returned to the South-West. Officers with tribal marks reportedly felt particularly endangered.

The officers claimed that "Egbesu boys" were secretly kïdnapping and kïlling their colleagues, especially those with tribal marks. They thrēatēned to resign if they were forced to return to Bayelsa.

The crisis later culminated in the ambush and kïllïngs of 12 police officers in Bayelsa, prompting President Olusegun Obasanjo to order a military operation that led to the måssãcre of civilians in Odi.

The incident, reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday, throwing the coastal community into panic. While details of the incident remain sketchy as at the time of filing this report, sources within the community confirmed the incident to Sahara Reporters.
