President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) ahead of the 2027 general election, declaring that the ruling party is united and ready to renew its covenant with Nigerians.
Tinubu inaugurated the council on Wednesday at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, where he charged members to demonstrate unity, discipline and commitment in mobilising support for his re-election while ensuring that governance remains a priority.
The President, while expressing appreciation to party leaders and supporters for their contributions to the last election, stressed that the ultimate measure of their commitment would be the ability to deliver electoral victories in 2027.
“As I stand before you with a heart full of gratitude and spirit full of resolve, it is my honour to inaugurate the presidential campaign council of the All Progressives Congress for the 2027 General Election,” he said.
“I thank all of you for the last election, but no one gets credit for an incomplete assignment until you deliver the next election, until you deliver your electoral wards, until you deliver the votes.”
The President also acknowledged the advice of the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, who urged him not to allow campaign activities to distract him from the responsibilities of governance.
Tinubu said he would continue to engage directly with Nigerians while the campaign council coordinates mobilisation across the states and local government areas.
He emphasised the need to sustain economic reforms and attract investment, noting that the government must continue to meet its financial obligations and create opportunities for future generations.
“We have bills to pay. The American creditors cannot wait. We want those investors to come in and invest for the future of our children,” the President said.
Shettima Defends Tinubu’s Leadership
Vice President Kashim Shettima, in his remarks, commended Tinubu’s courage and commitment to democratic development, citing his support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition in 2007 when the latter contested under the platform of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria.
Shettima also criticised Atiku for what he described as a lack of respect for the office of the President.
“You can call him Bola, if you like, call him Adekunle, but he is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the Vice President said.
He also faulted Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), over what he described as the use of misleading statistics and comparisons between Nigeria and other countries without adequate context.
Shettima’s remarks came as APC leaders intensified efforts to project Tinubu’s record and consolidate political support ahead of the next presidential election.
APC Chairman Promises Nationwide Mobilisation
The APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, described the inauguration as a demonstration of the party’s collective commitment to building a better Nigeria.
He said the presence of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, at the event demonstrated growing political support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Yilwatda urged members of the campaign council to communicate the administration’s achievements and policies effectively, insisting that the campaign must be anchored on the government’s record, an honest assessment of existing challenges and a credible vision for the country’s future.
He assured Tinubu that the council would mobilise voters across the country, from the ward level to local governments and states.
“Let the coming election be a contest of ideas, records, and policies and be conducted peacefully and with respect for the Nigerian people,” he said.
The APC chairman also stressed that the success of the campaign would depend on effective national leadership, the commitment of state chapters, the organisation of local government structures and the dedication of party members at the grassroots.
Uzodimma Defends Tinubu’s Economic Reforms
Governor Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum and serves as secretary of the campaign council, assured the President that the governors and other party leaders would work to communicate the administration’s policies and achievements to Nigerians.
He said the campaign would be issue-based and argued that Tinubu had demonstrated the political courage to confront economic challenges that previous administrations had been reluctant to address.
Uzodimma specifically cited the removal of petrol subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market, describing the decisions as difficult but necessary steps toward addressing structural weaknesses in the economy.
According to him, the administration’s reforms had attracted both domestic and international attention, with economic indicators pointing to improved growth.
He acknowledged that the policies had brought hardship and inconvenience to Nigerians but maintained that the government was moving in the right direction.
The governor also highlighted the administration’s tax reforms, linking them to broader efforts to strengthen public finances and improve the country’s economic outlook.
Wike, Adeleke, Soludo Endorse Tinubu’s Second Term
In separate goodwill messages, Governor Adeleke, Governor Soludo and Wike expressed support for Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
Wike, a prominent political figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said he supported Tinubu because the President had demonstrated the willingness to confront longstanding national challenges.
“Previous administrations identified our problems, but did not tackle them. You have not shied away from tackling such problems. You tackled them from Day One,” the FCT minister said.
He challenged governors and political leaders to work towards securing electoral victories for Tinubu in their respective states.
Adeleke also drew attention at the event with his signature dance steps, which elicited cheers from attendees at the crowded venue.
The endorsements from the three political figures highlighted the broad political alliances being assembled around Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election.
Akpabio, Abbas, Others Rally Support
Other political leaders who called for support for the President’s second-term ambition included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs Ibrahim Kabiru Masari and elder statesman Tanko Yakassai.
They urged Nigerians to support Tinubu for another term to enable his administration to consolidate the gains of its reform agenda.
Tinubu also commended Shettima for his speech, describing it as excellent and praising his oratory and patriotic commitment to national development.
The President further acknowledged the contributions of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, to the successes recorded during his tenure as governor of Lagos, particularly efforts to address coastal challenges.
“There is a limit, but there is no limit in daring. We dared the Atlantic Ocean, and the result is the Atlantic City in Lagos,” Tinubu said.
The President, however, reiterated that campaign activities must not come at the expense of governance, underscoring the need for his administration to continue addressing the country’s economic and developmental priorities while the party prepares for the election.
