Aston Villa have formally announced the signing of promising Nigerian goalkeeper Owen Asemota.
According to a report by All Nigeria Soccer, this marks Owen's first professional contract in football.
The 17-year-old talent has been on the radar of several top English clubs.
Asemota joined Aston Villa’s Academy in September last year following his departure from Arsenal, where he spent eight formative years.
Despite Arsenal’s efforts to retain him with a scholarship offer, the young shot-stopper opted for a fresh start.
Villa’s acquisition of Asemota is considered a major coup, as they successfully beat stiff competition from Premier League giants including Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Chelsea.
Since his arrival, Asemota has featured in ten matches for Aston Villa's U-18 team in the U-18 Premier League.
During these appearances, he conceded fifteen goals and recorded one clean sheet.
He also appeared in Premier League Cup fixtures against Middlesbrough and Fulham.
Additionally, Asemota received call-ups for Aston Villa’s UEFA Youth League matches against Young Boys and Club Brugge, though he remained on the bench during both encounters.
Known for his impressive athleticism and strong ball-handling skills, Asemota had also gained valuable experience at Arsenal.
He trained with senior goalkeepers and played in three U-18 Premier League matches before making his move.
