Police probe uniform controversy, alleged unauthorised deployment

The Police authorities have ordered that three personnel of the Nigeria Police Force allegedly involved in an unauthorised escort operation be produced before the Inspector-General of Police for further investigation and necessary disciplinary action.

According to a disturbing signal circulated within the Force, the incident came to the attention of the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, at about 1830hrs following the arrest of Force No. 530219, Corporal Dambaki Abreme, reportedly attached to MOPOL 20, Ikeja.

The corporal was allegedly intercepted at Ore while purportedly engaged in an illegal escort operation. He was reportedly accompanied by Corporal Abdullahi, attached to MOPOL 44, Force Headquarters, Abuja, and Corporal Umar of MOPOL 41, Damaturu.

The report stated that while Corporal Dambaki was arrested at Ore, the two other personnel allegedly escaped following a scuffle, prompting the relay of a disturbing signal to the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command. The development subsequently generated considerable attention on social media.

Further measures were reportedly instituted at about 1400hrs, leading to the subsequent arrest of the two other personnel. They are currently said to be in the custody of the Commander, MOPOL 20, Ikeja, pending evacuation to Abuja.


CONTROVERSY OVER UNIFORM

The report also addressed concerns over the uniform worn by the arrested personnel.

According to the Police authorities, the uniform was identified as a black Special Forces denim outfit bearing MOPOL insignia and Special Forces features, and did not resemble the uniform of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The authorities consequently faulted the initial alarm raised by the Divisional Police Officer at Ore, describing the action as a result of an apparent misidentification of the uniform.

However, the report maintained that the personnel were allegedly engaged in an unauthorised duty.

ALLEGED FAILURE TO REPORT TO ZAMFARA

The authorities further alleged that the affected officer had previously been demobilised and released from MOPOL 20, Ikeja, for deployment to Zamfara State, but allegedly failed to report at his new duty location.

Instead, he was accused of assembling what the report described as a group of unauthorised personnel in Lagos for the purpose of carrying out illegal escort operations.

The allegations are expected to form part of the investigation into the conduct of the personnel and the circumstances surrounding their presence in Ondo State.

ACTION AGAINST SUPOL ORE

The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, has reportedly been directed to take appropriate measures concerning the Superintendent of Police at Ore over the circumstances surrounding the incident and the alleged exposure of the Nigeria Police Force to negative publicity.

The Commander, MOPOL 20, Ikeja, has also been directed to collaborate with the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, to ensure that the affected personnel are produced before the Inspector-General of Police on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 1030hrs without fail.

The Police authorities expressed concern over what they described as an embarrassing and untoward development, stressing that the conduct of personnel must at all times conform to established rules, regulations and professional standards of the Force.

Further developments on the matter are expected to be communicated as the investigation progresses.
