General Silas Issues Urgent Open Appeal to Delta State Governor, Calls for Immediate Dialogue to Avert Tension Over Ward Delineation Exercise
By Amb. Gen. Silas Tamarau-Emi Toruwei, JP.LL (A Stakeholder in Ijawland)
Your Excellency,
I write as a concerned son of the Niger Delta and a stakeholder in Ijawland to passionately appeal to you to urgently intervene in the ongoing ward delineation exercise which is gradually generating tension and has the potential to ignite avoidable conflict between the Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic nationalities in Delta State.
Delta State has enjoyed decades of peaceful coexistence among the Ijaw, Urhobo, Itsekiri and other ethnic nationalities. It would therefore be unfortunate if an administrative exercise intended to strengthen democracy becomes the basis for distrust, hostility and communal unrest.
As the Governor and Chief Security Officer of Delta State, one of your primary responsibilities is to preserve peace, ensure justice and promote harmonious coexistence among all ethnic groups. The present circumstances require proactive leadership and sincere engagement with stakeholders from the Ijaw, Urhobo and Itsekiri communities. Dialogue remains the best instrument for resolving differences and preventing unnecessary crises.
Your Excellency, many Deltans are concerned about your reported remarks during a service at the Catholic Church suggesting that those aggrieved should wait until 2031. If indeed such a statement was made, I respectfully submit that issues touching on the rights, identity and peaceful coexistence of our people should not be deferred when prompt consultation and constructive engagement can provide a lasting solution.
History teaches us that communal conflicts are easier to prevent than to contain. Should violence break out, the consequences will not be borne by the Ijaw and Itsekiri people alone. The entire Delta State and indeed the Federal Republic of Nigeria will suffer the economic, social and security implications. The Niger Delta remains a strategic region whose peace and stability are vital to national development and economic prosperity.
I therefore call upon Your Excellency to rise above political considerations and immediately convene a roundtable involving Ijaw, Urhobo and Itsekiri leaders, traditional rulers, opinion leaders, youth representatives and other critical stakeholders. Such dialogue will strengthen confidence, promote understanding and foster lasting peace among our people.
The people of Delta State deserve justice, equity and fairness. We must not allow misunderstandings and unresolved grievances to threaten the peace our forefathers laboured to build. Leadership is best remembered not by silence in times of tension, but by courage, wisdom and timely intervention.
I urge Your Excellency to act now in the interest of peace, unity and the future of Delta State. Prevention remains far better and less costly than conflict management.
May God Almighty grant our leaders the wisdom to do justice and preserve the peace and unity of our dear state.
Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Long Live Delta State.
Long Live Peaceful Coexistence Among All Ethnic Nationalities.
Amb. Gen. Silas Tamarau-Emi Toruwei, JP.LL
