In 1999, as ethnic tensiøns between Yorubas and Ijaws intensified in Lagos and the Niger Delta, 150 Yoruba police officers abandoned their posts in Bayelsa and returned to the South-West. Officers with tribal marks reportedly felt particularly endangered. The officers claimed that "Egbesu boys" were secretly kïdnapping and kïlling their colleagues, especially those with tribal marks.
